Step Up Your Sound Sale › French Horn
What is a step-up French horn?
As your child grows musically, the right instrument makes a difference. A step-up horn (sometimes called intermediate or performance-level) is the bridge between a student horn and a professional one.
Most horn players are ready after two to three years of playing. A double horn, smoother rotor valves and an upgraded bell give them a richer sound, more accuracy and easier playability, keeping them motivated and confident.

Did you know that a double horn is really two horns in one?
Press the thumb valve and the air switches from the long F side to the shorter B♭ side. High notes get more secure, and players can pick the best fingering for every note. Come try it for yourself!
✱
Is their current mouthpiece helping or holding them back?
Most students play the same mouthpiece they started on. The right mouthpiece can make range, endurance and tone easier. Consider a new mouthpiece! Ask us to try a few during your demo. You’ll hear the difference right away.
Key components to know
Here are the features that make the biggest difference on a step-up horn.

Double Horn
F and B♭ sides in one instrument. The F side gives a rich low and middle range, and the B♭ side makes high notes more secure.
Thumb Valve
A fourth valve switches between the two sides. Step-up horns are full doubles, with separate tubing for each side.
Rotor Valves & Linkages
Precision rotors and smoother linkages give faster, quieter valve action and cleaner slurs.
The Bell
Yellow, rose or nickel-silver brass shapes the color of the sound. A detachable (screw) bell makes the horn easier to carry.
Comfort & Fit
Adjustable hand and finger hooks fit growing hands, so they can hold the horn correctly and play longer.
Pro-Level Touches
Hand-hammered bells, Kruspe or Geyer wraps, adjustable leadpipes and an upgraded case. Ask us which models include them!

Eastman
We make upgrading simple
Choosing the right horn can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how to get the most from your 1-on-1 demo:
- Bring their current horn and mouthpiece to hear the difference side by side. We’ll start by warming up on the horn they have now.
- Play the same short passage on each: a scale, a few lip slurs, some high notes on the B♭ side and something they love. Make the instrument sing.
- Stay open on features. The horn that sounds and feels best matters more than any single spec. (Use their own mouthpiece on each horn so you’re comparing just the instrument.)
- Listen from across the room, and bring their teacher’s notes (or their teacher!).
