Step Up Your Sound Sale › Trumpet

What is a step-up trumpet?

As your child grows musically, the right instrument makes a difference. A step-up trumpet (sometimes called intermediate or performance-level) is the bridge between a student trumpet and a professional one.

Most trumpet players are ready after two to three years of playing. A better leadpipe, an upgraded bell and smoother valves give them a bigger sound, more control and easier playability, keeping them motivated and confident.

Step-Up

  • Silver-plated or upgraded finish, often with a one-piece bell
  • Reverse or upgraded leadpipe for freer blowing
  • Monel or stainless steel valves for fast, smooth action
  • Adjustable 3rd-slide ring and 1st-slide saddle or trigger for tuning
  • Rich, colorful tone with greater dynamic control
  • Built to support advancing skills and expression

Did you know that the bell and finish of a trumpet affect both tone and projection?

A one-piece bell resonates more freely for a fuller sound that carries. Many players hear silver plate as a little brighter and lacquer as a little warmer. Come hear it for yourself!

✱

Is their current mouthpiece helping or holding them back?

Most students play the same 7C mouthpiece they started on. The right mouthpiece can make range, endurance and tone easier. Consider a new mouthpiece! Ask us to try a few during your demo. You’ll hear the difference right away.

Key components to know

Here are the features that make the biggest difference on a step-up trumpet.

Leadpipe Design

The leadpipe is the first tube the air goes through. A reverse or better-shaped leadpipe blows more freely and responds faster.

The Bell

A one-piece or hand-hammered bell vibrates more freely, giving a fuller, more colorful sound that projects.

Valves

Monel or stainless steel valves, precision-fit for fast, quiet, reliable action that stays smooth for years.

Slides & Tuning

A 1st-slide saddle or trigger and an adjustable 3rd-slide ring make it easy to bring sharp notes like low D and C# in tune.

Bore & Finish

A slightly larger bore supports a bigger sound, and silver-plate or lacquer finishes shape the tone and stay beautiful.

Pro-Level Touches

Rose-brass leadpipes, heavier valve caps, decorative trim and an upgraded case. Ask us which models include them!

We make upgrading simple

Choosing the right trumpet can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how to get the most from your 1-on-1 demo:

  1. Bring their current trumpet and mouthpiece to hear the difference side by side. We’ll start by warming up on the trumpet they have now.
  2. Play the same short passage on each: a scale, a few lip slurs, some higher notes and something they love. Make the instrument sing.
  3. Stay open on features. The trumpet that sounds and feels best matters more than any single spec. (Use their own mouthpiece on each horn so you’re comparing just the trumpet.)
  4. Listen from across the room, and bring their teacher’s notes (or their teacher!).
