Step Up Your Sound Sale › Flute
What is a step-up flute?
As your child grows musically, the right instrument makes a difference. A step-up flute (sometimes called intermediate or performance-level) is the bridge between a student flute and a professional one.
Most flutists are ready after one to three years of playing. A solid silver headjoint, open holes and a B-foot give them better sound, control and playability, keeping them motivated and confident.

Did you know that the material of the flute affects both tone and projection?
Solid sterling silver vibrates more freely than plated metal, giving a clearer, more colorful sound that carries.

Is their current headjoint helping or holding them back?
The headjoint shapes most of a flute’s sound. Ask us to try a few during your demo. You’ll hear the difference right away.
Key components to know
Here are the features that make the biggest difference on a step-up flute.

Headjoint: Silver & Cut
The headjoint creates most of the sound. A solid silver tube plus a precisely cut embouchure hole means faster response, a clearer tone and more color.
Open Holes
Open-hole keys add resonance and teach better finger placement. Removable plugs let students adjust one key at a time.
B-Foot
A slightly longer footjoint adds a low B and a fuller, darker sound, plus a “gizmo” key that helps high C speak.
Pads & Mechanisms
Hand-fitted pads seal better, and pointed (French-style) key arms keep the keys aligned and moving smoothly, so every note responds the way they expect.
Split E Mechanism
An extra linkage that makes the tricky high E easier to play and more secure. Available on many step-up models.
Pro-Level Touches
C# trill key, D# roller, gold lip plate, high E facilitator disk. Ask us which models include them!
Brands We Carry
Our stock rotates all season, so stop in or call to see which flutes are on the floor right now. We carry step-up models from:
Haynes Q Series
Haynes Amadeus
Yamaha
Powell Sonaré
We make upgrading simple
Choosing the right flute can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how to get the most from your 1-on-1 demo:
- Bring their current flute to hear the difference side by side. We’ll start by warming up on the current flute you have.
- Play the same short passage on each: a scale, a few high notes and something they love. Make the instrument sing.
- Stay open on features. The flute that sounds and feels best matters more than any single spec. (Don’t worry, we have plugs for the holes until you get used to them!)
- Listen from across the room, and bring their teacher’s notes (or their teacher!).
