What is a step-up violin?
As your child grows musically, the right instrument makes a difference. As your child grows musically, the right instrument makes a difference. A step-up violin (sometimes called intermediate or performance-level) is the bridge between a student violin and a professional one.
Most violinists are ready after two to three years of playing. A hand-carved body, ebony fittings and a professional setup give them a richer sound, more control and easier playability, keeping them motivated and confident.

Did you know that the wood and varnish of a violin affect both tone and projection?
Hand-carved spruce and maple vibrate more freely, and a quality varnish lets the wood resonate instead of muffling it. The result is a warmer sound that carries.
✱
Is their current bow helping or holding them back?
A better bow gives more control and a cleaner tone, and it makes advanced bow strokes easier. Consider a new bow! Ask us to try a few during your demo. You’ll hear the difference right away.
Key components to know
Here are the features that make the biggest difference on a step-up violin.

Hand-Carved Top & Back
A solid spruce top and maple back, carved and graduated by hand, vibrate more freely for a warmer, more complex sound.
Ebony Fittings
An ebony fingerboard, pegs and chinrest stay smooth, hold tuning better and wear far longer than painted or plastic parts.
Professional Setup
A carefully fitted bridge, soundpost and nut make the instrument easier to play and bring out its best tone.
Varnish
A quality oil or spirit varnish protects the wood while letting it resonate, and it ages beautifully.
Better Strings
Upgraded synthetic-core strings respond faster and give a richer, more focused tone.
Pro-Level Touches
Aged tonewoods, hand-antiqued finishes, upgraded bows and cases. Ask us which models include them!

We make upgrading simple
Choosing the right violin or bow can feel overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. Here’s how to get the most from your 1-on-1 demo:
- Bring their current violin and bow to hear the difference side by side. We’ll start by warming up on the violin they have now.
- Play the same short passage on each: a scale, some long tones on every string, a shift up the fingerboard and something they love. Make the instrument sing.
- Stay open on features. The violin that sounds and feels best matters more than any single spec. (Try their own bow on each one so you’re comparing just the instrument.)
- Listen from across the room, and bring their teacher’s notes (or their teacher!).
