This class introduces students to foundational drumming and percussion techniques rooted in West African drums and musical traditions. Students will explore hand drumming techniques such as bass, tone, and slap; stick drumming methods including straight and curved stick approaches, as well as open, muted, and hand techniques; and mallet performance through the study of the Dagara gyil. In addition to developing technical skills, students will gain an understanding of the cultural significance and historical context of these musical practices within West African communities.
