Percussion

What is Percussion?

Percussion is one of the most exciting and dynamic sections of the band! Percussionists don’t just play one instrument—they learn a whole family of instruments, from drums to cymbals, xylophones to tambourines, and everything in between.

In beginning band, most students start with either a snare drum or a bell kit. This helps them build the fundamentals of rhythm, stick control, and reading music before expanding to other percussion instruments.

🎵 Snare Drum – A key part of any band, used for crisp, rhythmic playing and marching-style beats.
🎵 Bell Kit – Includes bells (like a small xylophone), a drum pad, mallets, drumsticks, a case, and a stand—everything needed to start learning both rhythm and melody!

As percussionists progress, they will expand their skills to play a wide range of instruments, including bass drum, timpani, marimba, cymbals, and more. It’s a fun and versatile section, perfect for students who love variety and creativity in their music-making!

Some famous percussionists include Evelyn Glennie, Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, and Steve Gadd.
